Canadian Hydrogen Association — December 2025 Members’ Update
To members of the Canadian Hydrogen Association,
As Canada’s hydrogen ecosystem grows more complex and more competitive, the CHA’s ability to advocate effectively, convene influential partners, and advance strategic initiatives depends directly on the active participation of our members. Your insights, leadership, and collaboration shape our priorities and ensure that Canada’s hydrogen industry continues to move forward with ambition, unity, and impact.
To support continued member engagement, I’m pleased to announce that our 2026 Membership Package—which outlines our priorities, engagement opportunities, and major events for the year ahead—is now live. We hope this package helps you plan your participation in the year ahead and identify the opportunities most valuable to your organization. As always, our team is here to support your engagement and ensure that every member is positioned to benefit from the CHA’s national platform.
Moreover, as we approach year-end, I’m happy to share a consolidated update of the Canadian Hydrogen Association’s work since our last update in September. This fall has been one of our busiest and most productive periods, marked by growing momentum across industry, strengthened government engagement, and significant progress in our advocacy, international outreach, and member collaboration.
Industry Updates
Across Canada and internationally, CHA members have continued to demonstrate leadership in hydrogen production, infrastructure, technology development, and commercial deployment. Major milestones include:
- Bosch Canada joined the CHA, bringing deep engineering, industrialization, and hydrogen technology expertise across the value chain.
- Accelerera by Cummins partnered with Tyczka Hydrogen GmbH to deploy a 5 MW PEM electrolyzer in Bavaria, Germany—producing up to 2.2 tonnes of hydrogen daily.
- Powertech Labs reached a major national milestone with the shipment of Canada’s first heavy-duty hydrogen fueling station.
- HTEC officially opened the Burnaby Clean Hydrogen Production Facility, delivering 1.8 tonnes per day of clean hydrogen for B.C.’s growing fuelling network.
- StormFisher Hydrogen secured a US$50 million investment from Hy24’s Clean Hydrogen Infrastructure Fund to advance its North American project pipeline.
- Cariboo Clean Fuels and Elemental Clean Fuels completed a strategic merger—strengthening the Clean Fuel Corridor and building capacity to remove over 150,000 cars’ worth of emissions annually by 2030.
- Bloom Energy and Brookfield announced up to $5 billion in investment for advanced fuel-cell-powered AI factory infrastructure, highlighting hydrogen’s role in emerging high-power applications.
- Loblaw, with partners including FortisBC, HTEC, BC Trucking Association, and government agencies, launched the first sustained commercial demonstration of a hydrogen-powered Class 8 truck in B.C., supported by FortisBC’s Clean Growth Innovation Fund.
Advocacy Updates
Fall 2025 saw strong engagement with federal and provincial governments, highlighting hydrogen’s strategic importance to Canada’s economic and industrial future.
Highlights of our recent advocacy work include:
- The CHA published commentary in The Hill Times, emphasizing that hydrogen must be treated as a strategic national asset, foundational to industrial competitiveness and clean economic growth.
- The CHA submitted its official response to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) on the 2026–2030 Sustainable Jobs Action Plan, highlighting hydrogen’s role in workforce development, industrial renewal, and regional economic opportunities.
- We successfully hosted our annual Hill Day in Ottawa on October 8th, which included:
- Over 30 CHA member companies
- Senior federal representatives including:
- Senators, MPs, and Parliamentary Secretaries
- Leadership from NRCan, ISED, Transport Canada, the NRC, and the Transition Accelerator
- International partners including the Ambassador of Germany
- Alberta was a major centre of activity this fall. We kicked off with a successful Hydrogen Alberta day on October 2, showcasing the province’s expanding hydrogen ecosystem. That energy carried through to our packed Hub at the Pub night on October 22, our highly productive Alberta Advocacy Day on October 30, and the inspiring Women in Hydrogen Dinner on November 6—all reinforcing the strength and momentum of Alberta’s hydrogen community.
- On November 18th, we hosted our annual Ontario Advocacy Day, which brought together members of provincial parliament, ministers, and departmental stakeholders in a series of roundtable discussions with our members.
- The CHA and Hydrogen Ontario submitted a consultation document to the Standing Committee on the Interior on Bill 40, which outlines the economic, industrial, and decarbonization opportunities enabled by low-carbon hydrogen and recommends measures to strengthen Ontario’s hydrogen market.
Policy Updates
There have been a series of policy developments at the federal and provincial levels.
At the federal level, the Budget was approved on November 17. The budget is framed under the theme “Building Canada Strong”, emphasizing three pillars: Build, Empower, Protect. Hydrogen fits across all three, as a productivity driver, clean industrial fuel, and enabler of national energy security. A snapshot of relevant highlights can be found in our recent presentation to the CHA Government Relations Committee and supporting brief.
On November 3, Ontario launched a new round of the Hydrogen Innovation Fund (HIF) with a provincial investment of $30 million to support projects that unlock hydrogen’s potential to drive economic growth, create good-paying jobs and strengthen Ontario’s position as a world leader in the clean energy economy.
Significant developments have also occurred in Alberta. On November 27, the Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta signed a sweeping energy Memorandum of Understanding aimed at positioning Canada as a “global energy superpower” while maintaining a commitment to emissions reduction. The agreement confirms federal support for a new bitumen pipeline from Alberta to the West Coast and suspends—ultimately lifting—clean electricity regulations for Alberta. In return, Alberta will increase its industrial carbon price from $95/tonne to $130/tonne.
In British Columbia, the CleanBC Independent Review was released on November 27. Importantly, the Review calls for a full update to the BC Hydrogen Strategy by the end of 2026, creating a key window for sector stakeholders to shape a refreshed, evidence-based pathway for hydrogen in the province. This will shape our advocacy efforts in the province over the year ahead.
Global Presence & International Collaboration
CHA members were featured prominently at major events:
- Hydrogen Technology World Expo (Hamburg) — showcasing Canadian capabilities at the Canada Pavilion in collaboration with multiple member companies.
- Energy Taiwan & Net-Zero Taiwan 2025 (Taipei) — where our delegation engaged in technology forums, B2B meetings, industry tours, and collaboration with the Taiwan Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Partnership.
- Canada–California Hydrogen Forum (Los Angeles) — where CHA Vice-President Kelsey Brooks moderated the opening panel.
Moreover, CHA leadership participated in and spoke at major hydrogen conferences, forums, and trade missions, including:
- Representing Canada’s hydrogen sector at Hvolution Canada, contributing to discussions on hydrogen’s role in heavy industry, transportation, and net-zero strategies.
- Announcing a new Memorandum of Understanding with H2IT (Italian Hydrogen Association) to strengthen bilateral collaboration on innovation, technology commercialization, and market-ready solutions.
Closing Thoughts
From industry breakthroughs to government collaboration and international partnerships, the past few months demonstrates continued advancements of hydrogen development across Canada. As we head into 2026, the CHA remains committed to championing our sector, supporting our members, and advancing the policies and projects needed to make Canada a global hydrogen leader.
Thank you for your continued engagement and support.
