Edmonton, AB – The Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association is delighted to welcome ATCO Gas and Pipelines as a new Executive Member.

ATCO Gas and Pipelines delivers safe, reliable natural gas distribution service to more than 1.1 million customers in nearly 300 Alberta communities and is part of the ATCO Group of Companies. Headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta with 69 offices across the province, ATCO employees live and work in the communities they serve; building, operating and maintaining an extensive network of distribution pipelines. ATCO provides service to municipal, residential, business and industrial customers.

Hydrogen presents an exciting opportunity for ATCO, Alberta, and the world, with its ability to provide energy without carbon and seamlessly work within our existing infrastructure. In a first-of-its-kind project for Alberta, ATCO began delivering a blend of natural gas containing five percent hydrogen by volume into a subsection of the Fort Saskatchewan natural gas distribution system. As of October 26, 2022, about 2,100 customers became the first in the province to use hydrogen-blended natural gas to safely, and reliably fuel their homes and businesses.

With the support of Alberta Innovates, ATCO and Qualico are studying the logistics, technology requirements and other considerations involved in safely and affordably developing 100 per cent pure hydrogen communities – an important step towards eliminating carbon emissions that are produced when we heat our homes and use hot water. ATCO and Qualico are building a house to show how hydrogen technology would work in new Alberta homes. The house is currently under construction, with plans to connect it to a temporary hydrogen supply in spring 2024. It will showcase technologies that may be used in a future development in Strathcona County with the potential to be the world’s largest 100% hydrogen community. A future home to 85,000 residents and to commercial and industrial businesses, Bremner will be Sherwood Park’s newest community, a Canadian first, and globally, the largest scale project of its kind.

“As a new member of the CHFCA, ATCO is excited to collaborate with partners and experts nationwide who are committed to advancing an affordable and sustainable energy future. We believe that hydrogen will play a crucial role in decarbonizing Canada’s economy. We are eager to engage with fellow CHFCA members to exchange ideas, learn about innovative solutions, and work together towards achieving our shared goals of a prosperous and low-carbon future.” said Greg Caldwell, Director, Utility Hydrogen Strategy and Decarbonization, ATCO Energy Systems.

“We welcome ATCO as our latest member. ATCO’s internationally recognized leadership in the hydrogen sector enriches our industry, our association, and its members,” says Ivette Vera-Perez, President and CEO of the CHFCA. “We value their contributions and anticipate fruitful collaboration to propel Canada’s hydrogen economy forward.”

With more than 9,000 employees and assets of approximately $17 billion, ATCO is a diversified global corporation delivering service excellence and innovative business solutions through leading companies engaged in Structures & Logistics (manufacturing, logistics and noise abatement), Utilities (pipelines, natural gas and electricity transmission and distribution) and Energy (power generation, industrial water infrastructure, natural gas gathering, processing, storage and liquids extraction).
