CHFCA is pleased to announce North Atlantic as an Industry Member
St. John’s, NL – The Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (CHFCA) is pleased to announce North Atlantic as an Industry Member.
For over 30 years, North Atlantic has been a leader in Newfoundland and Labrador’s fuel industry, with an extensive network of branded gas stations, Orangestore convenience stores, and top-tier product supply for domestic and industrial sectors including international clients through their marine bunkering distribution channels. Partnering with Petro-Canada, North Atlantic has expanded into Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, now managing 110 fuel retail sites across the region. They’ve also diversified their fuel trading division into New Brunswick, to further expand traditional and renewable opportunities in other parts of North America.
As North Atlantic advances its business for the future, the company is committed to driving innovation in renewable energy production through the development of their Green Energy Hub (the Hub), a groundbreaking model for a lower cost energy transition. Located on the isthmus of Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula, the Green Energy Hub will leverage existing infrastructure at the North Atlantic Logistics Terminal and Come By Chance Refinery along with some of the best onshore wind resources in the country, to produce and transport low-cost green hydrogen to domestic and foreign markets. The Hub will include the facilities to produce renewable wind power, green hydrogen, and a variety of hydrogen derivatives including green ammonia, green methanol, and liquid organic hydrogen carriers. Leveraging decades of refinery and terminal operations and the industrial ecosystem that has been built around them, the full-service Hub will provide a centralized location for manufacturing, construction, operations, and maintenance services necessary to support the region’s bourgeoning wind industry.
Furthermore, in its commitment to make Newfoundland and Labrador a leading player in green hydrogen production, North Atlantic is taking the lead in establishing the Green Energy Centre of Excellence. This pioneering facility, in partnership with leading local and international educational institutions, will revolve around a wind-to-hydrogen derivative demonstration plant. This cutting-edge research and training facility will harness the region’s abundant renewable energy resources to conduct rigorous testing and provide industry professionals with top-notch training in operating the province’s planned green hydrogen developments.
“We’re excited to join CHFCA and establish partnerships to strategically drive progress in this sector. As we transition our business, the North Atlantic Green Energy Hub will further solidify our region as a global leader in green hydrogen, creating a significant opportunity for innovation and economic growth. We look forward to working with other stakeholders in shaping the future of energy, extending our impact not only in this country but also to a wider global community”, said Jeff Murphy, VP, Capital Projects with North Atlantic.
“We’re thrilled to welcome North Atlantic, a key energy player in Newfoundland, to the CHFCA,” says Ivette Vera-Perez, President and CEO of the CHFCA. “Their initiative to establish a new green energy hub in Placentia Bay is set to deliver green hydrogen and green ammonia to global customers, contributing to the formation of a vital coalition of global leaders in the region. We’re eager to collaborate with the North Atlantic Green Energy Hub and other regional stakeholders to foster the growth of a strong local hydrogen ecosystem.”
