Hydrogen Alberta Welcomes the Introduction of the 2025 Government of Alberta Budget

Mar, 7 2025

EDMONTON – Hydrogen Alberta, the provincial affiliate of the Canadian Hydrogen Association (CHA) in Alberta, welcomes the introduction of the Government of Alberta’s 2025 Budget, a fiscal plan that includes essential investments in emissions reductions and clean technologies to ensure Alberta’s commitment to reaching its decarbonization targets and strengthen Alberta’s energy sector competitiveness.

The 2024 Fiscal Plan designates approximately $646 million for Technology, Innovation, and Emissions Reduction Regulation (TIER) spending between fiscal years 2025-26 and 2027-28. TIER supports a range of initiatives designed to mitigate emissions, support clean technology development, and helps Albertans to adapt to a changing climate.

Notably, the fiscal plan allocates $10 million over the 2025-2027 biennium to the Clean Hydrogen Centre of Excellence. This initiative, managed by Alberta Innovates, aims to expedite technological advancements and innovation across the hydrogen value chain, addressing gaps in support and innovation, and bolstering Alberta’s hydrogen sector.

Furthermore, an additional $173 million in funding is projected for future grants over the next three-year period through the Alberta Carbon Capture Incentive Program. This program offers financial support to facilitate emission reductions within hard-to-abate industries by promoting the implementation of carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies.  These technologies are crucial for the cost-effective production of low-carbon hydrogen from natural gas.

“The 2025 Alberta Budget demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing clean technology and reinforcing Alberta’s leadership in the global hydrogen economy.” said Ivette Vera-Perez, President and CEO of the Canadian Hydrogen Association. “Investments in the Clean Hydrogen Centre of Excellence and carbon management initiatives are critical to driving innovation, accelerating hydrogen deployment, and ensuring the province remains a competitive player in the evolving energy landscape. We applaud the Government of Alberta for recognizing hydrogen’s role in reducing emissions while supporting economic growth, and we look forward to continued collaboration to build a thriving hydrogen sector in Alberta and across Canada.”

“This is great news for Alberta’s hydrogen ecosystem. The Alberta government’s investment will create jobs, boost both hydrogen supply and demand, and establish the province as a key player in the clean energy market, laying a strong foundation for the future.” said Rebecca Goldsack, Chair of Hydrogen Alberta.
