The Canadian Hydrogen Association and The Transition Accelerator release new Hydrogen FDI Report

Jul, 6 2026

The Canadian Hydrogen and Association (CHA) and The Transition Accelerator are pleased to announce the release of a new report on Hydrogen Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Market Formation.

The report examines cross-border hydrogen FDI patterns, investable opportunities in Canada’s hydrogen sector, key global markets for FDI attraction, and the barriers to broader market formation.

“Canada’s hydrogen sector represents a multi-billion dollar foreign direct investment opportunity,” says David Billedeau, President and CEO of the CHA. “The CHA is honoured to collaborate with The Transition Accelerator to assess where foreign participation materially support hydrogen market development across regional hubs and corridors, key global markets to target for FDI, and barriers faced by industry that could help inform a national hydrogen FDI and market development strategy. We extend our gratitude to CanExport Community Investments for their support of this initiative.”

Drawing on a scan of global hydrogen FDI activity, survey responses from sector stakeholders, hydrogen hubs and communities, as well as detailed interviews with CHA membership, it examines where foreign investment is valuable in advancing Canada’s hydrogen sector, or where the more fundamental challenge is the weak connection between Canadian technology innovation, domestic deployment, and market formation.

“The Transition Accelerator is proud to work with the CHA on one of the first rigorous and evidence-based looks at hydrogen FDI in Canada,” said Moe Kabbara. “Canada’s economic success requires us to take a hard look at our competitive advantages, and the hydrogen sector is an opportunity to strengthen Canada’s economic resilience. How we position ourselves in global markets today will determine our long-term competitiveness”.
